once upon a time....

so...ennio stopped by in vienna this week...and i was lucky enough to witness one of his very rare live appearances...

the great morricone was accompanied by the roma sinfonietta orchestra and the nuovo coro lirico sinfonico romano choir...there were about 200 people on stage!!!

it was a great concert...and one part of it was dedicated to the filmscores morricone did for the sergio leone western movies...and one of my favourite ones was the theme song to the 1968 piece "once upon a time in the west"...ENJOY!

jim seals and dash crofts formed the duo "seals & crofts" in the late 60s after working together in several bands before, to record over a dozen of albums together.

their second album "summer breeze" from 1972 turned out a great commercial success (no. 7 in us album charts) and established their status as one of the most popular soft rock bands of the 70s.

this is a man, who is responisble for soooo many melodies everyone knows!!!....at least among german speaking fellows...

think of the title melodies of heidi, wicki, alice´s adventures in wonderland, think of the jingle for milka chocolate, think of "marmor, stein und eisen bricht", or "ein bißchen spass muss sein" by roberto blanco!!!...and very important: the soundtrack to the legendary tv-show "captain future"...

one man was responsible for all these catchy songs and melodies from the late 60s until today: Christian Bruhn, who is now chairman of the german GEMA...

"rocking horse" is a us - band that released a selftitled album in 1975 on rca rcords...thats pretty much all i know about them.

i first heard the rocking horse on a mix by rub n tug...later i got the picture disc...

but...i had to get the original release...and this summer i finally got it...sorry, i cant put the cover of the record up here...i cant find it online...and i dont have a digi-cam!!!

the bands called "sea level", and the song "fifty four" is taken from their ´78 album "on the edge"...drummer on this record is joe english, former drummer of the wings(with paul and linda mccartney)...

its so great...this is jazz, disco, funk and rock and blues......at the same time!!!!

so, this cd was slippped to me by a friend yesterday. some three israeli indie / reggae girls -mc karolina, dana adini and yael deckelbaum make up -habanot nechama (hebrew: consolation).
minimalist arrangements of no more then acoustic guitars and warm lucious drums bring this album to life and make up a record of layed back summery thats hard to resist.
this song called - ever. a completely random choice as choosing which one to post was quiet difficult.

as banzai republic they had several releases on the super chillout "music for dreams" label, mentioned here...
the song i have for you, appeared on the the exclusive "balearic biscuits" label....it is called "remember me"...and the thing about it is, that it´s a re-edit of an annie lennox interpretation of "fields of gold", by sting...

this song is "closer", titletrack to soccio´s album from ´81 on atlantic records.
"closer" is pretty different to his other work...rather slow, relaxed and calmed...actually not disco at all...
at least in th common sense of it...

well after giuliodj posted this crazy remix i had no chance but to put some raw zero7 material up..its so smooth... . -henry binns and sam hardaker definetely one of my favorite crews of the past years.

this is some music i got of giuliodj's computer almost a a year ago. I can tell you - as you have probably found out for yourself already, this guy has a crazy taste in music - but respect that.
however, they are generally classified as an indie rock group,- the band of bees' style of music is influenced by a colourful range of 60's rock,country, raggea and jazz. the Bees have so far released three albums:2002's mercury puzzle, -sunshine hit me(which was acclaimed by critics for being recorded in frontman Paul Butler's own garden shed), its '04 major label follow-up -free the bees, and the band's most recent work,-octupus from '07.

well, coming from nouvelle vagues' coming home compilation released very recently, i've decided to post this song by -piero umiliani called -bambole. like many of his italian colleagues at the time, piero umiliani composed the scores for many exploitation films in the '60ies and '70ies. although not as widely regarded as, for example, -ennio morricone or -riz ortolani, he helped form the style of the typical European '60s/'70s jazz soundtrack that has recently been experiencing a revival through films like -kill bill and -oceans's twlevev (..shit movie by the way).

actuallty i just stumbled upon this band on a new music blog called -debaser. from the little i could find out about them, the embassy - a relatively new swedish band consisting of tristan cooke, mertyn nooy, relased this album called -tracking in '05.
check them out, -time's tight is a subttle song with very catchy guitar elements - classy indie rock with swedish accents.

eunice kathleen waymon, better known as nina simone recorded over 40 live and studio albums, the biggest body of her work being released between 1958 and 1974.
her songs have been covered, remixed and re-recorded so many times that i cant even start to list it here.
love me or leave me is a popular u.s song from the '20ies, written by walter donaldson and the lyrics by gus kahn, nina simone recorded her cover of this song on her debut album from '58 called - little girl blue(1958)
simone passed away in '03 but i am convinced that her songs are continuing to be remixed and covered by artist all around the globe

"kiss me again" is a song from 1978, by a band named "dinosaur", a project of ny-dj legend nicky siano on one hand and arthur russell on the other hand.

arthur russell, ingenious multitalent musician, composer, producer and visionary wrote this piece, both russell and siano worked on production.

"kiss me again" was the first disco record, released by the famous ny record label "sire "...and it became an underground hit..

hard-fi's debut album - stars of cctv was initially recorded as a nine track mini-album in a disused mini cab office; it was then mixed in a variety of unusual acoustic environments - in bedrooms, in pubs, and in their producer, wolsey white's BMW-1000 copies of this record were pressed with only 500 going on public sale. It quickly sold, receiving critical acclaim and radio play.

the band were then licensed to the -atlantic records label, where they were given the chance to re-record the album. The band went back to the cab office to maintain their unique sound.

And so to welcome me back lets start with a cracking tune from a band from Sheffield, UK that are currently making big waves with their latest single : "Heavyweight Champion of The World". The brainchild of Jon Mclure "Reverend and the Makers" are being as a labelled indie, funk, electro band and damned if they dont make a decent tune.

How can I describe it, ah.. its the first song you want to hear in the morning...sort of musical adrenaline to get the blood flowing again.

With a thumping intro beat I know its going to be a hit, so check it out before you have to hear it on a radio somewhere.

His first singles and debut album -portakabin fever was released by bristol-based independent record label - hombre recordings in association with ninja tune.

The music is at the more chilled-out, downtempo end of the ninja tune roster. several tracks feature looped acoustic guitar and keyboard sounds and his style has been termed "ruralbeat".

this album is great for leaning back and coming down. this track, -the lock up- will make you understand what i mean by that.

two producers/remixers teamed up to form the duo "beyond the wizzards sleeve". on their myspace site...they dont reveal their identity...but i am sure one of them is familiar to you... anyway...beyond the wiz... have done several great remixes. one of them is a remix of findlay brown, a folk/rock artist who released the album "separated by the sea" this year on the peacefrog label.

well, the chemical brothers you all know i guess- so i here is a little sneak peak into their new album -we are the night, which was just released last month. after announcing a new musical direction they came up with some unique tunes that offer music from different backgrounds. all together i cant really say if i like the cd, however the new album is heavily collaborated with the likes of -klaxons ,midlake ,ali love and wily mason on "battle scars" -which is a very cool track and posted here.

how can you not fall in love with phyllis dillon’s incrediably sweet voice? she might be best known as that beautiful & light soprano singing duets with ska & rocksteady authorities like alton ellis & hopeton lewis back in the 60’s & 70’s. but phyllis dillon is indisputably the queen of rokcsteady. She totally dominated the jamaican female scene with an almost yearly outcome of new material, from her breakthrough in 66, until just before she past away in 2004. Although initially their mainstream success was limited, their profile grew culminating in a number 2 single and number 1 album in the uk charts. however, the band's music was often eclipsed by its internal conflicts, many of which stemmed from doherty's considerable drug use, ultimately resulting in the breakup of the band.

Who? Well they've coined one of the best lyrical sound bites for a long time "like a monkey with a miniature cymbal", somewhere we've all been before.

Its Hot Chip, a brittish electro band that are a little geeky for my tastes when you see them live, but this track gets its beat and point accross pretty well on CD...but then again were electro bands ever meant to play live? Its debatable.

Anyways, I hear they are due to play this year's Sensory Input Download Festival happening at a private beach location yet to be disclosed somewhere on the Israeli coast later this year. Headlining acts confrimed to be playing so far are DJ Jules, Ike & The Eco Worriers and the newly reformed Butch and The Sidedish. This year's festival is bound to be a sell out event spanning two days of musical wonder, so get your tickets soon!

Many of you probably lie awake at night pondering the most intellectual of all dillemas- who would win in a fight between Falco and Hasselhoff, for instance (personally my money is on the Austrian, and he's been dead for a good ten years!).

The rest of you may be wondering what the future of punk or even music itself would have been like without the almighty The Clash? I shudder to think..

The Clash made punk accessible and more honest than the attention seeking likes of The Sex Pistols, and more importantly made music not just anarchist noise. The variety of their music was second only to Sensory Input, and man thats a good second place to be at.

History of Music Lesson Number 4: Lola, The Kinks

Today, we cover perhaps the most important lesson to be learnt from music history. We all know the scenario: you're in a club, a little worse for wear, had a few too many tequilas, smoked a few too many...Either way, your vision is blurry and your judgement impaired... but she looks ok doesnt she?

Well as Rabbi Ray Davies and The Kinks discovered in their 1970 song "Lola", it turns out that she is actually a he. This subject has of course been explored in more depth by other disciples of this lesson such as Lou Reed in "Take a Walk on The Wild Side", Aerosmith and David Bowie to name but a few.

The Kinks deserve a mention as a band who have thrown their influence into indie music over the years and have added some real classics such as "Waterloo Sunset" to the annals of rock history, and still manage get the Thursday night drunks a-jigging in the indie clubs everytime the old boy plays one of their tunes.

Its a worthy lesson, and one that you should learn sooner rather than later. An excellent track as well.

this is phoenix - the band formed in 1991 in the semi-affluent parisian suburb of -versailles- , in the same culture that produced late-90s bands such as -air and -daft punk; Phoenix started as the backing band for a remix of Air's "kelly watch the stars" single. soon after, phoenix released their 2000 debut album.

Hey Gravity! - Inside Out

Its time to go back to our punk roots a bit, albeit some very mild punk. A breath of fresh air, this is a 5 piece band made up of music industry veterans fronted by an extremely charismatic female lead singer Justine Berry. Backed up by the guitar and song writing expertise of ex-90's pop wonders Dodgy guitarist Andy Miller, they have combined elements of the garage rock leftovers of M.A.S.S. to reform as Hey Gravity!

For any you who have seen them live, you'll know that its a theatrical experience with more energy than an Iranian nuke factory.

Their latest opus "Risen" has received much critical acclaim in France, where they are more popular than Nicolas Sarkozy, and is doing the rounds climbing into popularity in the rest of the civilised world. Check it out.

I have to share this site with anyone who wants to know about it. www.goodblimey.com - a site thats pretty good, almost as good as Sensory Input but lets be realistic- nothing is as good as Sensory Input. Perhaps except for sex.

Anyways, the best section of the site is the Tunes area which has volume after volume of mashups (seven to be precise). I'm sure you are all familiar with the concept of mashups- check them out there is every type of mashup in his archive, some very good and some that sound like you are playing too many records at once. Not so good.

But here, I have salvaged one that works fine and that may lead you to find some more.

Lose a band member due to "internal conflict", which turns out to be drink and drug addiction. Re-group, reform release a more accoustic album and then... produce a fantastic no holds barred Rock and roll album blah blah blah..

Sound familiar? Meet the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, a band who started out in San Fransisco. Having been there and come back they have just released their latest album "Baby 81" which is a return to the rock fold and a true return to form.

Two tracks are outstanding. The outspoken "Weapon of Choice" and "Lien on Your Dreams", go and buy the album today and tell them you saw and heard it first on Sensory Input. Superb.

this most incredible soul voice coming out of that blond girl is just unbelievable. recently known for her vocals on will hollands -quantic soul orchestra- she released a couple albums of her own: my favorite letters (2005) and -under the munka moon 1 (2005), and 2 (2006).

An excellent chilled out track from Crowded House front man Neil Finn's 1998 solo album "Try Whistling This".

This is a track with an excellent baseline and I think its a prime candidate to be remixed for a more modern club version. What do you think Julian?

History of Music Lesson Number Three: Butch and The Sidedish

Who? Well the year was somewhere around 2002, a dark time for music.

Somewhere on the horizon, was a 24 piece band specialising in trance blues electronica rock funk that the world was not ready for. Their name? Butch and The Side Dish.

Sadly the band only recorded one studio album which plummeted in all the charts and received much critical trashing. Their genius was truly misunderstood.

All 23 members of the band except for Texas Zack died in a freak car wash accident, which was messy and yet soapy.

Here for anyone who wants an insight into the band that never was, is an exclusive deleted unreleased live track from their unbelievable album "Butch and the Sidedish: The Early Days"

Variety is the spice of life and no one can conplain that we dont try hard to cover the full spectrum of musical style and taste here at Sensory Input. Bribe, blackmail and tell your friends to visit us or we'll have to re-release MC Hammer (thats a threat).

Right...Power up the flux capacitor for January 1969, we'll pay a visit to the Creedence Clearwater Revival.

A band that specialised in what was known as "swamp blues" coming out of South Lousiana in the 1960's, even though this lot came from sunny California. They played at Woodstock and went on to churn a few more tunes out before disbanding in 1972..

Some of the best lessons in life have to be learnt by trial and error. Don't make a mistake, try this track...it's superb and a classic.

But this one is so much more chilled out. Its a bit of a cold look on the spice that we all add to our lives, but chilled out as hell.

who has got the zuton fever ? this track opens the first ever release by the zutons from '04 named: who killed the zutons? - you might not like it the first time around but i gurantee that from the second time you hear it, you wont be able to forget about the zutons anymore.
originally a four-piece, abi harding began joining the zutons on stage for a couple of songs mid-set, playing simple saxophone lines. she was very popular with the crowd. the other band members liked the way the saxophone enhanced their sound. abi became a full member, contributing vocals and sax. her trademark: she always performs barefoot on stage

De Nova, Universal Blues- The Redwalls

You know when you play that game where you are organising a fantasy gig, and you can invite any bands from the history of all time to play and record one new album- who do you choose? Hendrix? The Who? The Doors? The Beatles?

You have to miss The Beatles sometimes, they created some unique sounds that everybody can appreciate even today. But everything The Beatles did individually (I.e. Wings, John & Yoko, George Harrison and even solo Ringo) after they split up was crap, for want of a better word. There just wasn't that vibe.

Here's one band that seemed to pick up exactly where The Beatles left off. They sound so bloody similar its almost like The Beatles have got back together to record some honest and very decent Rock and Roll tracks. They hail all the way from Chicago, Illinois and go by the name "The Redwalls".

One track that I've singled out is called "It's Alright", a bit of naive rock and roll never killed any one right? It was released on their debut album in 2003 called Universal Blues, and again on their 2005 album De Nova. Their latest "Wall to Wall Sessions" is just out, and all well worth a listen.

You might not think that a Starbucks on the corner of every street in Baghdad is a good idea, but theres a lot of good things we can thank America for: Like porn and Baywatch. Quite frankly I find it hard to tell the difference between the two, only I like my porn with a little less Hasslehoff.

Either way, the good and the bad features in a track by LCD Soundsystem on their most recent album "The Sound of Silver". It was one of those albums I bought, only for that one song. I still think that this is the strongest track on the album, and has an unquantifiable quality that makes it stick to the inside of your head. Funny that.

Well they were ten a while ago, but still worth a mention today.

I am not a fan of the instant gratification that can be found in the quick fire world of greatest hits compilations. Strictly speaking, albums are there to work through like a messy relationship-the good parts and the bad parts. But there is a reason to buy this album of greatest hits from a band that keeps getting better with age- it has a limited release track called "Kiss Of Life" that is outstanding mix of electric fusion. Every track on this album is a gem, and a valid snapshot of their career so far, but this track is a rarity.

History of Music Lesson Numero Uno

As part of our ongoing mission to revitalise your playlist and save your musical souls, we have to take regular trips back into the past....and not without 1.21 gigawatts of pure listening pleasure.

Now the trip has already begun with a foray into the world of Fleetwood Mac courtesy of my reverend colleague

Giuliodj and even a look back at Dusty Springfield with the artist formerly known as Ike... but today we are going to rediscover our Northern Soul like its 1989.

Its hard not to notice how much great music came out of Manchester in the 80's and 90's. Groundbreaking inventive bands like Joy Division, New Order and The Smiths paved the way for one band that was to forever change the face of Rock and Roll: The Stone Roses.

Like 'em or hate 'em, there would have been no Oasis, no Charlatan and certainly no Kasabian without this band. Rock and roll meets funk crashed with a wild drum loop and wah wah pedals galore, saw the release of a track that you lack: "Fools Gold". Referencing Nancy Sinatra and the Marquis De Sade, this is a history lesson in itself that has a bassline to put you to shame.

Dude looks like a.....Rabbi?

Now I'm not one to endorse second rate spoken word/break beat records from artists like The Streets, but this my friends is anything but.

Introducing Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pimp, the holy saviors of a genre that was left for dead. What makes them different? Well for a start its the wit and humour in the lyrics. Biting but reassuring... and did I mention it? Dan Le Sac looks like a Rabbi back fresh from a daytrip in Amsterdam.

One track in particular that stands out is "Thou Shalt Always Kill" if anything just for its superb video. The lyrics just about sum our generation and society up in a way that Dylan did for his generation, and the other artists that are so gloriously namechecked on this track.

If you do anything today listen to this track, watch the video and then listen again...its the mutts nuts and not just because its English.

Remember folks, your music collection and possibly even your life, will never be complete without Sensory Input.
